A few years ago, I bought a small painting and it changed my life and introduced me to collecting and I’d love to help you do the same.
This little painting changed my life. It really did. I worked in publishing since I left university. I like books. Always have. I like reading about people and escaping to other worlds. I like stories. But I always felt drawn to art. In my twenties I devoured books about Australian artists. I read all about them. I said to myself, one day I will buy myself a piece of art. And then so many years later I bought this painting by Alice Muskett.
And then, this happened… I left my job and decided to set up a business selling antiques and art. I buy things that I love. That I would want to keep. I want to share that excitement with others of how it feels when you buy something you love. Perhaps something that could change your life too.
I lovingly hand-pick art and antiques which are extra special, so that they can be enjoyed again by a new generation of owners. Objects which carry with them some history. Things that have stood the test of time. As useful and beautiful today as they were hundreds of years ago.
I focus on decorative objects from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. In creating Georgegen I was inspired to do something different and create an online store that would be full of stories and that would be interesting for collectors. Georgegen is a collection of rooms, each with an individual focus, dedicated to helping collectors find interesting, unique pieces.
From the Georgians to the Victorians each object carries hundreds of stories with it. At the end of every product description, you will find The Gen. Here you might find out more about the person who made the object, the era when it was made, or just a little bit of history you might not have known.
E-commerce can be a detached (albeit convenient) experience so I hope in my store you discover stories about people, or snippets of information you might not have known, and that this brings a sense of connection, and maybe even understanding, across generations.
a collection of books and research materials
This historical thread interwoven in an object connects it to the present, and with any luck continues to the future. This is the magic of a loved object. It makes it more than an object; it’s a way of understanding and connecting people across generations. It’s why I called my business Georgegen. And also, because I really love all things from the Georgian era, the homes, the colours, the furniture…
It’s important to me that all the objects retain their patina, the marks made by the history of time which cannot be replicated. Leave your mark. Let an object become part of your story until it’s time to pass it on to the next generation, your children, a family member, a beloved friend. You’ll then have something that becomes part of your shared story. Nostalgia for times gone by and memories you made together.
I believe you should always buy what you love, something you find interesting, inexpensive or otherwise. You might find it in my store or you might enjoy reading about things I love in The Gen Journal. I would love that. I hope you visit often.
From one generation to the next surround yourself, and your home, with things you love.
