Henry James’ small masterpiece Washington Square ends with the line “Catherine, meanwhile, in the parlour picking up her morsel of fancy work had seated herself with it again — for life, as it were.”

Catherine Sloper ultimately chose her fancy work rather than a life with a husband who would have been unsuitable. Although, perhaps not a traditional ‘happy ending’, there is happiness to be found in making one’s own choices which Catherine ultimately did.

Henry James.
