“… If the glass

Were brighter it would melt. That radiance

Is not a way of saying this will pass:

It says it will remain.”

These lines come from Clive James’ wonderfully poignant Transit Visa.

Glass which is the most fragile of mediums has a mesmerising quality and a surprising permanence. When we are long gone it somehow remains, in the grandeur of cathedrals to household items.
