The Long Gallery

The Long Gallery at Georgegen features paintings by talented artists, some of whom have become forgotten by the passage of time. With a particular focus on Australian Art, this thoughtfully curated collection spans the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century.

FEATURED PIECE | The Field. NGV. 1968.

It’s almost 60 years since the seminal inaugural exhibition The Field was held to celebrate the opening of the re-sited National Gallery of Victoria to its then new home on St Kilda Road. “The staging of The Field catalysed debate in the late 1960s regarding the course of Australian art – the exhibition was divisive and its reception varied.” Learn more at the NGV.

In The Library at Georgegen you’ll find the exceedingly rare and highly collectable original exhibition catalogue from 1968.

Rarely does this catalogue become available so if you are a collector of antiquarian books, or Australian art, enquire now.

“I would gather flowers … people aren’t always at hand.”

You really cannot but smile at the quips from the delightful Margaret Olley. Art can be affordable and transformative. So whether you are a first time buyer or a seasoned collector we hope you find the perfect piece for you in The Long Gallery at Georgegen.

The final word goes to the great lady, she used to say, “I sell frames, and the paintings are for free!” Here at Georgegen we sell paintings and the frames are for free!
