Victorian

Circa 1880–1900 | Unknown (Possibly Australia)

An antique hand embroidered net panel, possibly used as a curtain. The panel is beautifully embroidered on dark brown net in applique with silk threads. It includes many of the motifs of the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements, including the influence of Japanese art, flowers and foliage, insects and birds. It’s a beautiful item and it’s simplified design and use hark back to the ethos of William Morris (see The Gen).

DIMENSIONS: Length 144 cm x Width 50 cm.

CONDITION: In excellent original condition. The threads retain their vibrant colour. There are a couple of minor holes which are to be expected but the piece displays very well.

REFERENCES: For a window or mantel valance with strikingly similar colourway and design including bullrushes and butterflies see the Museum of History NSW, Accession Number L2018/3-1:3. Perhaps these two pieces of drapery once graced the window of a stately home?
